RuPaul's Drag Race UK winner The Vivienne's cause of death revealed

James Lee Williams, known as the drag performer The Vivienne and inaugural winner of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK, died from cardiac arrest caused by the effects of taking ketamine, the family shared on Monday. Simon Jones, The Vivienne’s friend and manager, told the BBC, “I hope by us releasing this information we can raise awareness about the dangers of ongoing ketamine usage and what it can do to your body.”

“Ketamine is an extremely dangerous drug that is becoming more and more prevalent in the UK,” The Vivienne’s sister Chanel Williams also told the BBC. “If we can help raise awareness of the dangers of this drug and help people who may be dealing with ketamine addiction then something positive will come from this complete tragedy.”

The Vivienne won the first season of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK in 2019. They went on to star in their own six-part BBC docuseries, appeared in various reality programs, and competed on Ru Paul’s Drag Race All Stars. Williams died in January at age 32. They were remembered at a vigil organized with the help of Sahir House, Liverpool’s oldest LGBTQ+ charity, for which The Vivienne was an ambassador. The vigil and subsequent funeral was attended by family, friends, fans, fellow celebrities, and drag queens alike.

“I will remember The Vivienne as being a really kind-hearted, lovely person as well as being the most amazing talent. What I loved the most about The Vivienne was that she made me laugh the whole time,” Jones said in a separate statement to the BBC. “There is literally no one who has made me laugh as much as Viv, whether that was at a show where she was reading the audience… or when we were going for lunch or dinner or hanging out. There was always a quick one-liner and something a bit savage. She was always hilarious and I’m really going to miss that. She brought so much love and warmth into my life.”
