Does that mean he’s retiring the basement fish tank cage? Not a chance.

Joe is the “luckiest guy in New York” in latest You teaser

Somehow, Joe Goldberg managed to lie, stalk, and murder his way to the highest echelons of society. Ain’t that the real American dream? The latest teaser for You season five finds the former bookseller (Penn Badgley) uneasily adjusting to the upper class lifestyle he now enjoys with his heiress beau, Kate (Charlotte Ritchie). We know how hard it is for our poor little protagonist because, as always, we’re unconsenting participants in his inner monologue.

“Love tests us. I’ve been tested more than most. This is the last time,” Joe tries to convince himself for what definitely won’t be the last time. After deeming his tale a “true rags to riches story” and admitting that his life with Kate is one he “would have been quick to judge in the past,” he claims that they’re using their “power for the better—to help those who aren’t as lucky.” Yeah, yeah—you keep telling yourself that, Joe. We’d bet any amount of money that one of those less fortunate women is trapped in his basement as he speaks.

You’s final season finally takes Joe back to where it all began: New York City. That decision “allowed for it to just become grounded in the way that it needs to also have this kind of spectacular finish,” Badgley teased to Tudum. The installment picks up three years after the season four finale. Kate is now CEO of the Lockwood Corporation with Joe playing the adoring—and now very famous—husband by her side. That’s a big change for the bookseller, who’s “been really under the radar,” in past seasons, according to EP Justin W. Lo. “Now that he is well known in New York, social media is on him. That’s something fun for us to explore.”

In addition to Joe’s infamy, season five is also getting a bunch of new cast members for Joe to woo and/or kill. Joining this season are Madeline Brewer, Griffin Matthews, Anna Camp, Natasha Behnam, b, Pete Ploszek, Tom Francis, and Nava Mau. Badgley also teased that a familiar face would be coming back to haunt him. “There are many loose ends in Joe’s past,” he said. That much is certainly true.

You’s fifth and final season premieres April 24 on Netflix.
