Ayo Edebiri and Will Sharpe are former gifted kids in new Apple TV Plus series

If you were “a pleasure to have in class,” this one’s for you. The people’s princess Ayo Edebiri will co-star in a new AppleTV+ series with The White Lotus‘ Will Sharpe. In addition to being a performer, Sharpe is a writer and director whose behind-the-camera credits include Landscapers and The Electrical Life Of Louis Wain. He created and writes Prodigies, which he will also executive produce alongside Edebiri.

According to a synopsis (via Deadline), Prodigies follows “Didi (Edebiri) and Ren (Sharpe), two ex-child prodigies who have been together since they were children. Now in their early 30s, they are starting to question whether their very ordinary existence is living up to the extraordinary promise of their childhood. Inevitably, they find themselves asking the same questions of their relationship.”

Being a “former gifted kid” is a perennial millennial obsession, so much so that the effects of such trauma (read: being in an advanced math class in middle school) have been covered in outlets such as BuzzFeed, Vox, and The New Yorker (if we had to wager a guess, it’s probably because almost everyone who writes for those outlets is a “former gifted kid”). Sharpe and Edebiri, meanwhile, are just regular gifted adults. Edebiri has stayed booked and busy since breaking out on The Bear; she’s got another season of that movies with Luca Guadagnino and James L. Brooks coming up this year (in addition to being a talented writer and director in her own right). On top of his own projects, Sharpe will play Mozart in the limited series Amadeus and is starring in Lena Dunham’s upcoming rom-com series Too Much. Sharpe was tapped to direct the adaptation of Crying In H Mart with a screenplay from the book’s author, Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast, but he stepped away from the project amid the Hollywood strikes, Zauner recently shared.
