We’ll be honest: We’re a bit surprised by this one. Not because Heated Rivalry wasn’t huge—it absolutely was, amplifying the reach of Rachel Reid’s already very successful books, and doing incredible numbers for its U.S. streamer HBO Max when it rolled out in the second half of 2025. But it is, we can’t help but note, still hanging out right there on HBO Max right now; outside of something like those Kpop Demon Hunter singalongs from back when that movie was having its multi-month peak, it feels unorthodox to see a theater chain and a TV show team up for something that is explicitly about creating a communal experience, a full year after the show came out. (And/or a chance to see some of TV’s better recent sex scenes play out in the highest resolution possible, we guess.)
The most blatant reason for this theatrical run, of course, is that the show is still cooking its highly anticipated second season, with an eye toward releasing it in a still-vague 2027; a big theatrical push is one way to get the hype building back up before the show returns. From Regal’s point of view, meanwhile it’s probably worth pointing out that November is not going to be huge for blockbusters (at least until the new Hunger Games movie, Sunrise On The Reaping, comes out later in the month), as Hollywood saves up for the big one-two punch of Dune: Part 3 and Avengers: Doomsday in December. We have to assume an executive somewhere looked at a bill topped by a new Martin McDonagh movie and The Cat In The Hat and figured it couldn’t hurt to lure a horde of randy hockey fans into the theater for a couple of weeks.
Heated Rivalry lands in theaters, in two-episode screenings, starting on November 3.
