Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are getting ready to roll up their blazer sleeves as Miami’s most famous and stylish undercover detectives. On Monday, Universal announced that production is underway on Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice ’85 by sharing two images of Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs and Butler as Sonny Crockett, dressed in their Miami finest and armed with guns. In the photos, Jordan gives the camera his most intimidating, “don’t mess with me” stare, decked in all-black attire with a tie and a leather jacket (which begs the question: Isn’t that one layer too many for Miami Vice weather?). Butler, meanwhile, is in motion, wearing a fitted gray blazer and pants, gun pointed at someone or something within shooting range, with an unmissable shiny gold watch on his wrist.

Jordan and Butler are the latest duo to bring the Miami Vice world to life. The franchise began with the ’80s series Miami Vice, which ran for five seasons and starred Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson as the crime-busting detective duo. At the time, the show was celebrated for its cinematic look and sound (and its famous “In The Air Tonight” needle drop). Michael Mann, the creative force behind the show’s success, later wrote and directed his own 2006 film starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, which earned mixed reviews. Kosinski will film his reboot of Miami Vice for IMAX (which tracks, given his past work behind the camera for Top Gun: Maverick and F1), from a script written by Dan Gilroy. The movie will star Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, Whitney Peak, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo as a cartel leader, and Walton Goggins, most likely playing a henchman. Miami Vice ’85 is currently set to release in theaters on May 19, 2028.
