Running Point shoots and scores second season

Netflix scored a slam dunk with Running Point, and the streamer isn’t letting it leave the court any time soon. This writer won’t attempt any more basketball puns (for everyone’s sake), but the Mindy Kaling comedy has officially been renewed for season two. This is a real victory for fans of the very new series; season one just premiered February 27, and Netflix hasn’t exactly been generous with their renewal orders of late.

Perhaps it’s telling that the company cited an outpouring of fan demand—probably the best thing to keep shows afloat—in their season two announcement. A video posted by the streamer this morning started with a bunch of screenshotted Instagram comments begging for another season of the Kate Hudson-led show, before Hudson herself popped up to declare that “a good basketball team owner knows when to listen to the fans, so we hear you.”

Running Point stars Hudson as Isla, the only sister in a family of brothers, who is appointed as the owner of the Los Angeles Waves after one of her brothers is forced to resign from the position. “I really love writing shows about ambitious women,” said Kaling, one of the show’s creators. (She co-created this one with Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen.) “We wanted to ensure that audiences could see themselves in the characters’ struggles and triumphs.” Running Point also stars Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Brenda Song, Fabrizio Guido, Chet Hanks, and Toby Sandeman. No word on a premiere date for season two, but season one is currently streaming on Netflix.
