Cinderella gets the Wicked treatment in the first trailer for Netflix's Steps

Everybody knows that, in the classic story, Cinderella’s two stepsisters were terrible, evil, spiteful creatures who only tormented their downtrodden sister because they felt like being jerks. What Netflix’s new musical comedy animated feature Steps presupposes is… maybe they weren’t?

That’s the premise set out in the trailer for the streamer’s upcoming film, where Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) finds her one magical night at the ball accidentally interrupted by her two overlooked stepsisters Lilith and Margo (Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu), only for them to have to team up to prevent an actually evil queen (Nikki Glaser) from taking over. Deprived of Bette Midler’s Fairy Godmother and her dotty magic, the sisters band together to save the day, all while learning that their storybook rivalry isn’t as black and white as everyone assumed.

Prominently billed as “from the studio that brought you K-Pop Demon Hunters,” Steps is produced by Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions, and promises a decidedly Wicked-like reevaluation of a fairytale narrative where female characters do horrible things to each other, just because. Packed with chases, magic, self-aware jabs at convention (the pampered Cinderella doesn’t know what sweat is, prompting Lilith to explain, “Not all of us had a magical personal assistant pulling the strings”), and plenty of Wicked and Frozen style female bonding, Steps‘ trailer sees Netflix hunting for a share of the same colorfully musical empowerment market. (The Cranberries’ “Dreams” hauntingly swims through the action, while the trailer promises an original song by Jennie, whose girl group Blackpink was the inspiration for K-Pop Demon Hunters‘ heroic HUNTR/X.)

Steps, which also features the voices of Daniel Radcliffe, Young Mazino, Peter Dinklage, and Damian Priest, will premiere on Netflix on November 20.
