What's on TV this week—Rooster and The Madison

Welcome to What’s On, our weekly roundup of notable shows. Here is what’s happening on TV from Sunday, March 8 to Saturday, March 14. All times are Eastern.

New this week

Rooster (HBO, Sunday, 10 p.m., series premiere)

Steve Carell stars in this HBO half-hour comedy from Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, which sees The Office great as a best-selling author whose relationship with his professor daughter (played by Charly Clive) grows more complicated when he accepts a gig at her university. Phil Dunster, Danielle Deadwyler, Connie Britton, and Alan Ruck help round out the ensemble. The A.V. Club will recap the show weekly.

The Madison (Paramount+, Saturday, 3 a.m., series premiere)

In Taylor Sheridan’s latest family drama, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell lead the Clyburn clan—which also includes folks portrayed by Matthew Fox, Beau Garrett, and Patrick J. Adams—who relocate from glitzy Manhattan to rugged Montana to put themselves back together after a tragedy. Look for The A.V. Club’s on Thursday.

Sunny Nights (Hulu, Thursday, 12 a.m., series premiere)

Comedic crowd-pleasers Will Forte and D’Arcy Carden team up in this show as siblings who make the move to Sydney to kick-start their spray-tan business. After a blackmail plot, they soon find themselves caught up in Australia’s criminal underworld. The A.V. Club’s review publishes on Wednesday.

Scarpetta (Prime Video, Wednesday, 3 a.m., series premiere)

The seemingly indefatigable Nicole Kidman is back for another Prime Video project. An adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s series of books, the eight-episode crime thriller follows the actor’s titular forensic examiner as she works to unmask a murderer while navigating the fraught relationship with her flighty sister Dorothy (Jamie Lee Curtis). Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and Ariana DeBose co-star. Check out The A.V. Club’s review on Tuesday.
