As Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars assemble Marvel heroes from across the multiverse, either to position them as the franchise’s next heavy hitters or to give them their gold-watch retirement party (with no promise of a pension), one name has remained conspicuously absent from the films’ respective casts. That, of course, is Nick Fury, former director of S.H.I.E.L.D., current director of S.A.B.E.R., and the architect of the Avengers, whose last appearance in the MCU was during a very busy 2023. Fury’s last bow was in The Marvels with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, which is somewhat lucky because his prior appearance was in the deeply unwatchable Disney+ series Secret Invasion, which did for the Skrulls what Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson’s 2004 Super Bowl halftime show did for nipples on standard television—kill them before they had a chance to truly live.
Anyway, it seems Nick Fury will get his chance to take a proper final bow in an upcoming Avengers film, according to The Direct, which spoke with Fury actor Samuel L. Jackson at the red carpet premiere of Renny Harlin’s action film The Beast. After the interviewer gushed that they loved Jackson’s appearances as the eyepatch-sportin’ superspy (botching the chance to compliment the 77-year-old actor for his awesome turn in 2006’s Black Snake Moan), and asked when he’d appear in another Marvel film, Jackson was characteristically upfront. “Next movie… [The] movie after this one,” he said, which learned scholars of upcoming studio slates can interpret as meaning Avengers: Secret Wars, as that superhero team-up movie follows the one that’s due to premiere on December 18.
As to Fury’s role in Secret Wars, whether his story will resolve his space-faring S.A.B.E.R. arc or whether space-chum Captain Marvel will fly higher, further, faster alongside him once more, Jackson claimed to know about as much of the film’s story as the actors who have already shot their scenes for Doomsday. “I have no idea. [Marvel] hasn’t told me anything, other than, ‘You’re not gonna be in this movie. You’ll be in the next.'” So, there you have it: Nick Fury Will Return In Avengers: Secret Wars! Now don’t expect any new developments for Secret Wars beyond the odd casting update and the odd bewildered shrug whenever those involved in the production are asked about it—at least until the day after Secret Wars premieres on December 17, 2027.
