Hacker sentenced to 18 months in jail for Hollywood nude photo theft
Ryan Collins, a 36-year-old man who hacked into Apple’s iCloud service in 2014, releasing stolen nude photos of actresses—including Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst, Gabrielle Union, and hundreds more—onto the internet, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. Collins plead guilty to the crime back in March, revealing that he used phishing techniques, including fraudulent emails that purported to be sent from Apple itself, in order to gain access to the accounts.
The incident set off a heated debate in the public zeitgeist, with several of the actresses condemning the media’s coverage of the invasion of their privacy. Meanwhile, the FBI was put on the case, attempting to track down the hacker. It’s not clear if Collins was the only hacker involved in the events; back in 2014, investigators were also looking into a number of suspects employing similar methods.
