Heartbreak feels good in a place like AMC Theaters, and there’s been a lot of it this week. In honor of the late Diane Keaton, AMC is bringing back two of her most beloved films to the silver screen. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Annie Hall and Something’s Gotta Give are heading to 100 AMC theaters this Friday for a short repertory run.
It’s not difficult to understand why they picked those two. Ignoring Finding Dory and The Godfather, the Nancy Meyers-directed rom-com Something’s Gotta Give is Keaton’s highest-grossing movie, edging out the likes of The First Wives Club, two Father Of The Bride movies, and 2018’s Book Club. Meanwhile, Annie Hall netted Keaton her only Oscar win—though she was nominated for Reds, Marvin’s Room, and Something’s Gotta Give, too. However, the movie has fallen out of favor in recent years due to the allegations against Woody Allen, whom Keaton consistently defended throughout her life. Still, Keaton appeared in eight of his movies, including the early funny ones, which helped establish her as one of America’s favorite leading ladies.
Earlier today, Meyers penned a tribute to Keaton on Instagram. “As a movie lover, I’m with you all – we have lost a giant,” she wrote. “A brilliant actress who time and again laid herself bare to tell our stories. As a woman, I lost a friend of almost 40 years – at times over those years, she felt like a sister because we shared so many truly memorable experiences. As a filmmaker, I’ve lost a connection with an actress that one can only dream of. We all search for that someone who really gets us, right? Well, with Diane, I believe we mutually had that.”
“She was fearless, she was like nobody ever, she was born to be a movie star, her laugh could make your day and for me, knowing her and working with her – changed my life. Thank you Di. I’ll miss you forever.”
