Heimdall
Who he is: Heimdall, a.k.a. The Watcher Of Worlds
His power: Heimdall controls the Bifrost Bridge, which is the magical means by which Asgardians can travel throughout the nine realms. He is also one of the most powerful beings in Asgard, capable of seeing and hearing almost anything in any of the realms. He’s a master combatant and, like all Asgardians, possessed of superhuman strength, speed, and durability.
His story: Heimdall is introduced in Thor as the servant of King Odin, having served for hundreds of years as the guardian of Asgard and controller of the Bifrost Bridge. He allowed Thor, Loki, Sif, and the Warriors Three to travel to Jotunheim in hopes of learning how Frost Giants infiltrated Asgard without his knowledge. And while he’s sworn to obey the orders of the king, he commits treason by helping Lady Sif and the Warriors travel to Earth (a.k.a. Midgard) in order to bring back Thor and defeat Loki. For this act, he’s released from his duty by Loki, who then freezes him solid, though Heimdall is eventually able to shatter the ice and free himself.
Similarly, in Thor: The Dark World, Heimdall is unable to see Jane Foster when she’s possessed by the Aether, encouraging Thor to seek her out. Heimdall aids in protecting Asgard against the Dark Elves. He’s referenced in Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. when Lady Sif meets Coulson’s team, but he’s not seen. His only other appearance comes in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, where he is seen in Thor’s vision, warning the God Of Thunder that his actions will have devastating consequences.
Played by: Idris Elba, the handsome devil.
Currently, Heimdall is: Carrying out his ongoing duty on Asgard.
Where will we see him next? Thor: Ragnarok, due out November 3, 2017.
