Mystique could be the next X-Men character to get a spinoff
Coming off of the success of this weekend’s Captain America: Winter Soldier—and the success of Marvel’s entire The Avengers franchise—and with Fox’s recent announcement of plans to create its own Marvel-style interlocking universe, the producers of the X-Men movies are naturally exploring the idea of more spin-offs for characters from that franchise. Lauren Shuler Donner, who’s produced all of the X-Men films, tells Entertainment Weekly that, in addition to Wolverine, she’d like to see more standalone films with Mystique, Gambit, and (as long rumored) Deadpool. With Mystique playing a major role in X-Men: Days Of Future Past—and also being played by the very popular Jennifer Lawrence—Donner suggests she might logically be the next character to get a spinoff.
The idea for more X-Men films comes as the studio already has three X-Men movies slated: Days Of Future Past comes out this May, with the next ensemble X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse, due in 2016, followed by the third Wolverine in 2017. This, in addition to Marvel’s aggressive calendar for producing films until 2028, ensures we will be seeing many, many more superhero films.
