Hollywood has seen the future and it is Ryan Gosling, having positioned its favorite, occasionally fattened young goose to at last become the mainstream swan that the acclaim for his early, quirky career has always promised. In addition to headlining the upcoming ensemble actioner Drive, the buzzed-about romance Crazy Stupid Love, the remake of Logan’s Run, and the awesome-looking crime pic Gangster Squad, Gosling is now signed to make his directorial debut—a remake of the 1980 musical drama The Idolmaker first mentioned in MGM’s massive slate of revived properties last year. Based on the real-life experiences of rock promoter Bob Marcucci, former manager of Fabian and Frankie Avalon and the like, the film could potentially get some sort of 21st-century update that would find Gosling (who’s also tapped to star) mentoring some sort of Bieber-like module—though that’s just speculation. On an interesting side note, The Idolmaker was also the feature debut of Taylor Hackford, which bodes well for Gosling one day marrying this generation’s Helen Mirren, whoever that is. Actually, it's probably still Helen Mirren, and she'll probably still look pretty good.
