In March, Russell Crowe traveled to Rome to secure a papal endorsement for Darren Aronofsky’s for Biblical epic, Noah. After a short meeting with the star, director, producer Scott Franklin, and Paramount executive Rob Moore, Pope Francis did not give the film his blessing—but it turns out there were worse people in Vatican City they could’ve asked. For example, Mimmo Muolo, the reviewer tasked with providing his take on Noah for the Vatican’s official newspaper, Avvenire. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Muolo echoed many critics whose outlets that couldn’t claim Pope Paul VI as a major booster, calling the film “strange” and “perplexing.” (Apparently they’re still waiting to get The Fountain in Vatican City.) But Muolo’s biggest beef with Noah has the most likely point of origin, as the writer took issue with departures from the film’s source material, calling it “Noah without God.” Still, when he’s dropping comparisons to the Harry Potter films and the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, he has to recognize that even omniscient, omnipotent authors like J.K. Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien have their shit messed with by Hollywood all the time.
