Convoluted back stories are part of the superhero condition, and Wonder Woman has been subject to several ret-con facelifts since psychologist, inventor, and bondage enthusiast William Moulton Marston modeled her after his wife and live-in girlfriend in the early ‘40s. The only constants in Diana Prince’s backstory are that she is a princess from an island where there are no men—everything else is up for debate.
So, naturally, there has been some confusion about which Wonder Woman will appear in the upcoming Batman Vs. Superman movie. According to EW, producer Charles Roven referred to Wonder Woman as “a demigod…her father was Zeus” in a recent talk at the Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television. That would place her in the “New 52” continuity as concocted by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang—Azzarello and Chiang took over Wonder Woman as part of DC’s 2011 hard reboot, and changed her from a magical clay figure to a flesh-and-blood demigoddess, the “natural-born” daughter of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, and Zeus, a god notorious for not being able to keep it in his pants. This is currently the official backstory for Wonder Woman’s character at DC, at least until Azzarello and Chiang’s run on the title is over. At that point, who knows—she could change into an alien wearing Diana Prince’s skin and, besides removing her from our pull lists, there would be nothing we could do about it.
