America is bitterly divided alongside partisan lines, and the gulf seems to be getting wider with each passing day. We’ve actually gotten to the point where Republicans are promising to block Supreme Court nominees who haven’t even been named yet, out of pre-emptive bitterness over the prospect of their team having to take its ball and go home come November 8. But while it might seem like we long ago passed some indefinable point of acrimony from which there is no return, things aren’t actually as bad as they seem. We’re not screwed as a nation. The Trolls movie just hasn’t come out yet.
Co-director Mike Mitchell put on his troll-colored glasses for a recent interview with Variety, where he expressed his earnest belief that watching Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick voice talking trolls would make the world a better place. In the movie, the trolls are always happy and love to hug one another, and Mitchell is confident that attitude will spread to viewers of the film. “I think the internet is very judgmental,” he says, “not to mention the very strange election coming up and social unrest. We really wanted to make a film that made people feel happy, that explored the feeling of happiness.”
The Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar echoes this opinion, saying, “this is a movie that will inject happiness back into society.” Whether that harmony will be achieved through the filmmakers’ intended means, or through the backdoor channel of uniting everyone in mutual annoyance, remains to be seen. Why Care Bears—similarly cheerful, huggy creatures with magical charms on their bellies—have thus fair failed to achieve world peace is also unknown. Not enough celebrity voice actors, probably.
