Wonder Woman will officiate a same-sex wedding in an upcoming comic
DC Comics isn’t a big fan of its superheroes getting married, but apparently it has no problem with its superheroes helping other people get married. As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald (via The Advocate), Australian illustrator Jason Badower wrote and drew an upcoming issue of the publisher’s Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman that will feature her officiating a same-sex wedding. Clark Kent is also in attendance, and afterwards he comments to Wonder Woman that he didn’t know she supported same-sex marriage. (He’s from Kansas, he’ll get with the times eventually.) This prompts Wonder Woman to respond, “Clark, my country is all women. To us, it’s not ‘gay’ marriage. It’s just marriage.” Yeah, Clark. Seriously.
But, once again, there’s a but. In a twist that would be surprising if it hadn’t already happened two times before, this nice story about equality in comic books has to be undercut by the immortal monster known as “continuity,” and it’s our duty as nerds to point it out. See, like the gay Green Lantern and the gay Ice Man, that isn’t technically “the real” Wonder Woman. Sensation Comics isn’t part of the actual DC universe that the regular Wonder Woman or Superman books take place in, it’s a separate, continuity-free world in which creators can play around without having to worry about whatever big crossover nonsense is happening in the normal stories. So yeah, Wonder Woman is officiating a gay wedding, which is awesome, but it’s not a gay wedding that’s happening in the “real” Wonder Woman comic. That shouldn’t diminish the impact of this scene, but it does make these big comic book publishers come across as dopey as Clark Kent for not making stuff like this happen in the real stories more often.
Anyway, the issue of Sensation Comics is available digitally now, and a print version will be in stores in November. You can see a blurry preview image of the scene in question below.
