Absolutely Fabulous also coming back as a movie
Apparently flush with new ideas—or rather, the idea to do that same idea that’s already been done a few times, but again—Jennifer Saunders has announced plans to create a feature film version of Absolutely Fabulous, the BBC comedy about two women who used to be pretty cutting-edge clinging desperately to their youth. Of course, that premise turned increasingly ironic over the years, as after the series’ initial run ended in 1995, Saunders and co-star Joanna Lumley repeatedly revived their self-destructive, Bolly-blitzed socialite characters Patsy And Edina—and often with diminishing returns—most recently taping three UK television specials that will begin airing next month.
But Saunders is clearly confident that AbFab is due for another comeback, and according to Deadline, already has the opening of the film planned: “Ab Fab: The Movie will kick off with Patsy and Edina waking up hungover in the empty drifting yacht of an oligarch in the middle of the ocean. Even worse, their cellphones can’t get a signal.” “And then Edina kills and eats Patsy, and the rest of the film is her blubbering uncontrollably over what she’s done as she tries to work up the courage to commit suicide. And then she does. Cue ‘Wheel’s On Fire,’ roll credits,” goes the rest of the script that we just wrote in our head. But no, they’ll probably get rescued, get drunk, and do something embarrassing.
