Cibo Matto reuniting behind new album and tour
Foodie femme fatales Cibo Matto haven’t been heard from in nearly a decade, with Japanese ex-pats Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori finally parting ways after 1999’s Stereo * Type A, and thus giving rise to lots of tongue-in-cheek assertions that Honda’s former boyfriend Sean Lennon (who joined in ’97) had at last turned into his mother. He wasn’t really their “Yoko,” of course: The trip-hop/lounge-pop/hip-hop/slo-mo disco/whatever group simply wanted to explore other things—and they did, with both releasing solo material as well as collaborating with artists like Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, and John Zorn—but now it seems they’re ready to give it another shot.
According to a press release, the band will build on its recent March benefit concerts for Japan with a full-blown reunion, embarking on the “Yeah Basically Cibo Matto” tour, which will find them yeah basically playing the below dates along the East and West Coasts this summer. Even better, they’re also putting together an all-new album due for release in early 2012, previews of which will likely stream at the new Cibo Matto website. In the meantime, you can hear a hint of some of that new material in the appropriately goofy promo video below, followed by one of their ’90s highlights.
