DVD Release List – 3/31/09
Undoubtedly the biggest release of the week is Oscar’s most recent Best Picture winner, Slumdog Millionaire, but rather than reigniting the debate over whether Slumdog skeptics are a hateful, soulless breed or whether the movie is a one-note, corny bore, let’s talk up a couple of 2008’s more interesting arthouse hits, namely the Spanish time-travel mindbender Timecrimes and the French missing-persons thriller Tell No One. Both are more about plot twists and mood than about anything particularly profound, but they’re very entertaining, and well worth a rental.
What’s worth buying? How about three classic musicals now available on Blu-ray from Warner Brothers: An American In Paris, Gigi and South Pacific. Or even better: Criterion’s stellar new edition of Andrzej Wajda’s 1983 historical drama Danton, which brings the philosophical conflicts of the French revolution to vivid life. Danton is dramatic, creepy and artful (and better than any of last year’s Best Picture nominees).
