John Wick directors are planning a sequel
Last year’s action film John Wick delighted both audiences and critics with its dazzling shootout choreography, enticing crime-world mythology, and tangible pathos—all perfectly tailored for star Keanu Reeves, like a sleek, blood-splattered suit. So, it’s no surprise that directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are now talking about a sequel.
In an interview with Movies.com, Stahelski said, “We’re in development right now.” Judging from the full interview, “development” simply means that they’re talking about making another one—but as John Wick fans know, serious dialogue usually leads to serious headshots. The director added, “We have ideas for days, and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original. It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important.”
It’s nice to hear that the directors are concerned first and foremost with the series’ artistic integrity—another example of this is the original film’s pristine cinematography—but let’s not forget about the genre requirements. After all, John Wick is said to have once killed three men in a bar with a pencil. That’s an extended flashback waiting to happen.
