The world can rest easy today, as Dread Central announces that “One For The Road,” a short story from the Stephen King collection Night Shift, will be adapted into a short film. (This is via King’s Dollar Babies program, which allows young filmmakers the opportunity to adapt his work.) This puts to rest the fear that perhaps the only King work that would be in development right now would be Mr. Mercedes. And The Things They Left Behind. And Bad Little Kid. And Gerald’s Game. And, most likely, the Home Depot shopping list that King left unattended on his car dashboard last week.
This news is the latest evidence we have to confirm that Stephen King is just Ryan Murphy in disguise (or is it the other way around?), since apparently people will stick any crazy-ass idea either one has up on a screen. In this case, the story involves two aging Mainers (as per the law of the King) who try to rescue a family whose car gets stranded in a blizzard. Of course, since this is Stephen King, the car is stuck in the area known as Salem’s Lot. (Cue dramatic chipmunk.) The adaptation will be helmed by writer-director Corey Norman (The Hanover House), and is set to film this year.
