Though each season of American Horror Story is different, there are some constants: a crazy-shit-stack, plenty of Dutch angles, and Jessica Lange. But after next year’s fourth season, you can count Lange out, at least. The actress tells Entertainment Weekly that this time, she’s really done, owing to her desire to spend her year doing something, anything besides reacting to whatever scary-movie, possibly turquoise bric-a-brac Ryan Murphy and Co. might assemble. “It ends up being a lot of time during the year being committed to something,” Lange says. “This is a six-month commitment every year. That will be four years in a row. I want to have more time to myself I guess. Once it’s over and I have a full year ahead of me with nothing to do, who knows? It might not have been the best decision. But I think four years doing something is a sufficient amount of time.” Of course, Lange has made these sorts of statements before, with Murphy always dismissing them. But this time, Lange really seems to mean it—unless it’s all just a set-up for the show’s fifth season, a spin on “found footage” movies that finds Jessica Lange tormented by a sadistic camera crew who refuses to leave.
