Stanley Kubrick's long-lost "unwatchable" directorial debut could get DVD release

The legendary, mostly unseen Fear And Desire—which marked the directorial debut of Stanley Kubrick, and which the filmmaker himself later deemed “unwatchable” and fought to keep hidden—will likely get a restoration and DVD rerelease soon, because Kubrick is dead, his family doesn’t own the copyright, and thus nobody can do a thing about it. George Eastman House curator Caroline Frick Page says that the recent discovery of a long-lost negative in Puerto Rico will make the restoration possible, so that fans can finally see the story of four soldiers stranded behind enemy lines, where they contend with Fear and Desire, which we believe are the names of giant Japanese monsters. Actually, that’s not far off, as the tagline (unearthed by Movieline) is “Trapped… 4 Desperate Men and a Strange Half-Animal Girl!” Wonder why Kubrick found it embarrassing?
