Thirteen years have passed since My Big Fat Greek Wedding was loosed upon the world, so at the risk of heightening your triskaidekaphobia, we’re checking out the trailer for the sequel. Yes, it seems someone found the loose ends or stray bits of lamb left on the spit of the first film to string together a plot—and another wedding—for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2: Feta Late Than Never.
Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) are now happily Greek-married, and raising a Greek daughter of their own. And because time is an asshole, they’re turning into their parents—or at least, Toula’s parents. Their half-heartedly emo daughter, Paris, sulks about having attentive parents and an overbearing extended family, so she threatens to move to Florida or Texas (for college) just to get away from them. From that point on, the Portokalos-Miller family tries to rescue the girl from her own bad decisions.
Just in case you were worried this movie wasn’t going to get sufficiently big, fat, or Greek, we learn that all the Portokalos kids are bastards because their parents were never officially married. It seems Maria (Lainie Kazan) and Gus (Michael Constantine) failed to notice that their marriage certificate wasn’t signed by the priest, so they start planning their first/second wedding. But Maria is so happy to learn she isn’t actually hitched to the guy from Thinner that she wonders why women feel the need to get married at all. The trailer somehow manages not to collapse in on itself in the face of this perfectly valid point, and then Toula shares a nice moment with her daughter.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 will squeeze into theaters March 25, 2016.
