Gotham is back, and so is a familiar storyline

Because The A.V. Club knows that TV shows keep going even if we’re not writing at length about them, we’re experimenting with discussion posts. For certain shows, one of our TV writers will publish some brief thoughts about the latest episode, and open the comments for readers to share theirs.

  • Never Mind The Bullocks: “Doesn’t anyone actually die in Gotham anymore?” That’s right, even the stiffs in the morgue are finding their way back into the streets of Gotham.
  • The episode opens on Mario’s funeral, thus kicking off a story that it feels like Gotham has told a thousand times: Jim Gordon, persecuted man, must fend for himself and prove that, despite the way it looks, he did the right thing.
  • Victor Zsasz is such a welcome presence on this show. Anthony Carrigan’s performance is a near-perfect balance of menacing and charming.
  • It turns out that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree with Selina Kyle and her mother, Maria. They’ve shared similar struggles, and both are continually getting roped into a life of crime.
  • Early in the episode, Cobblepot sees a vision of his father walking around his home, and later learns that his father’s remains have been stolen from the cemetery. Corpses everywhere this week!
  • Gotham pulls a pretty neat storytelling trick with the “resurrection” of Cobblepot’s father. We learn that it was Nygma, Barbara, and Tabitha pulling the strings, hoping to set in motion a plan that would see Cobblepot slowly lose his mind.
  • Bruce can’t fathom why the owl statue is so important to the Court of Owls, but as is revealed later, when light shines through it a map of some sort is revealed.
  • Alfred is totally smitten with Selina’s mother, and it’s pretty adorable.
  • “You still love James Gordon.” I am very, very sick of this show’s attempts at anything resembling conflicted love and relationships. It’s almost always a hindrance to whatever other story is happening at the time. Unless we’re talking about Cobblepot and Nygma.
  • I’m also not particularly interested in whatever mess Maria is in, but I’m willing to give it some time to play out, if only because Selina deserves a more substantial story.
  • More reasons to love Zsasz: his emphatic and hilarious loyalty when Falcone cancels the hit on Gordon mid-shootout.
