The new Power Rangers movie has a release date

Despite the fact that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was a thing that some people liked when they were kids, the colorful team of monster-fighting teenagers hasn’t desperately grabbed for anyone’s nostalgia-filled wallet yet. Sure, the Power Rangers had a movie in 1995, but that was more about getting children to use their parents’ money, not about adults using their own money. Luckily, enough time has passed now for Power Rangers to get the gritty, modern reboot that it so desperately deserves, and—at the risk of literally blowing up everyone’s minds with information somehow more shocking than that—it’s going to be executive produced by Transformers/Star Trek/Amazing Spider-Man’s Roberto Orci.

The movie has already been slotted into a July 22, 2016 release date, and its screenplay is being put together by Thor and X-Men: First Class writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller. Now, at the risk of saying something positive about a movie like this, it actually seems like a brilliant idea. A group of people with superpowers have to figure out how to work as a team—like The Avengers—only they’re all teenagers, so they could have a bunch of those love triangles that kids are so into these days. Plus, it’s based on an existing property, and the success of Transformers: Age Of Extinction and the new Ninja Turtles movie have proven that a lot of people somehow aren’t sick of those yet.

Anyway, now we can get on with the most important part: dream casting! Who should play Zordon? Who should play Alpha 5? And, most importantly, who should play Bulk and Skull? We want a motion-captured Andy Serkis for all four.
