Weekend Box Office: A diminished Sparta still conquers

Though it dropped over 50% of its phenomenal opening weekend take, 300 still had enough juice to crush the competition again in its second week with $31.2 million in receipts. Buoyed by improbably strong word-of-mouth—a reality that has us asking, "Who are these people?"— the critically drubbed comedy Wild Hogs continues to perform strongly without much drop-off, collecting $18.8 million and sailing past the magic $100 million dollar mark (and counting). The motorcycle movie barely edged out the week's strongest newcomer, the Sandra Bullock vehicle Premonition, which took an even $18 million despite yet another round of bad reviews. Other newcomers didn't fare as well, including the ventriloquist horror film Dead Silence and Chris Rock's relationship comedy I Think I Love My Wife, which made $7.8 million and $5.7 million respectively.

In limited release, Ken Loach's Palme D'or winner The Wind That Shakes The Barley netted a respectable $8366 per screen average. And since it's part of IFC's First Take program, interested viewers outside of New York and Los Angeles can find it on select On Demand systems, too.
