Celebrate the tech of yesteryear in a new stop-motion music video
Never discount the appeal of outdated technology. Vinyl made a comeback and there are at least two different documentaries (Rewind This! and Adjust Your Tracking) about how VHS is now the collector’s domain. But what of the tape, the floppy disk, the walkman and their ilk that once cluttered up many a room? Now these pieces of cultural ephemera are being put to good use in a new music video.
Jonathan Chong of Dropbear Digital created and directed the music video for “Quack Fat” by Melbourne-based musician Opiuo. Using stop-motion animation and “240 audio cassettes, 5,600 feet of video tape, 108 floppy discs, and 1 retro walkman,” Chong created the visually impressive video that echoes the ’80s and ’90s feel of the song as well as incorporates some favorite games from that era. For those interested, there’s a time lapse making-of video that documents exactly how the images were created.
