Absolutely Fabulous to return (again)
Absolutely Fabulous, the British comedy ode to (barely) functional alcoholism, will return for three new episodes, according to a report in The Guardian, which says that Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are on board to reprise their roles as Patsy and Edina sometime this summer. Rumors about a possible reunion began late last year, when Lumley said Saunders had broached the idea and Lumley responded, “'Bring it on'. Because we're all still here. Mother's still alive, the wonderful June Whitfield. Julia Sawalha [and] Jane Horrocks [are] all still alive and available… and I think we just have to do it.” Indeed, not being dead—always an excellent reason to do something.
Of course, it’s not the first time Saunders has been up for reliving her most celebrated creation: After bringing things to a close in 1996 with a flash-forward to an elderly, near-death Patsy and Edina, Saunders decided to revive the show in 2001 for two more seasons plus a handful of specials that ran through 2004, then even tried to launch an American adaptation in 2008 (albeit one that never got picked up). Clearly Saunders has yet to run out of story ideas for vain, boozy social climbers—or rather, ways to rework that one idea. (To be fair, it was a pretty good idea.) Anyway, Saunders has yet to start on her script, so there’s currently no storyline in place, but—and we're just guessing here—likely it will involve Patsy and Edina getting drunk and doing something inappropriate for their age.
