Get Involved, Internet: Fund a Star Trek fan series before the new official one comes out
For years, Trekkers and Trekkies have had to rely on fan-made films to satiate their thirst for new, Chris Pine-free Star Trek adventures. Just this morning, though, CBS announced plans for a new Star Trek TV series from big-screen reboot writer Alex Kurtzman, so the time-honored trend of people making their own Star Trek shows will soon become less necessary. With that in mind, a group of Trek fans are Kickstarting a new fan series that could very well be the final Star Trek fan series (it won’t be, but you don’t have to know that).
The series is called Star Trek: Renegades, and it has a couple of big advantages over most fan-made Trek things: They’ve already created one episode, and they have actual people from Star Trek playing actual characters from Star Trek. That’s like one step away from actually being canon! Renegades features Walter Koenig and Tim Russ, reprising their roles as Pavel Chekov and Tuvok, and it tells the story of a secret team of fugitives-turned-soldiers who are tasked with completing one of those classic “too dangerous for the good guys, let’s send in the bad guys” secret missions. The episodes of Renegades being funded in this Kickstarter campaign will be written and co-executive produced by Star Trek veteran Melinda Snodgrass, who wrote about her excitement for the project (and how it came to be) on her official site.
The Renegades crew is looking to raise $350,000 by December 2, and is currently sitting at just under $130,000. You can see the show’s pilot episode below.
