No doubt lured by the promise of free Dexter swag, Philip Seymour Hoffman has signed on to supplement his already-very-busy, Oscar-winning film career with a starring role in a Showtime series. Hoffman is set to executive produce and star in his first TV series regular role in Trending Down, alongside Parks And Recreation’s Kathryn Hahn, in the comedy pilot from This American Life contributor Shalom Auslander. Entertainment Weekly reports Hoffman will play “a man facing his own obsolescence after his advertising agency is taken over.” By ruthless banditos? Alas, no. By demographic-chasing, corporate number-crunchers, in what Showtime calls “a blistering attack on our youth-obsessed culture, and a darkly comic examination of what it means to matter. Or matter not,” and thus sounds far more worthy of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Even though we’d also gladly watch Hoffman battle banditos.
