Caught up in the same end-times, repent-now-ye-sinners religious fervor that has pushed studios to mount movies about Moses, Judah Maccabee, and God and Lucifer, Paramount and New Regency have reached a deal to back Darren Aronofsky’s own biblical epic Noah. The studio partners are now eyeing next spring to start production, and have already recruited in-demand screenwriter John Logan (Gladiator, Bond 23, Lincoln) to touch up the script about God’s special friend with the boat, the one who’s willing to help him move in exchange for not having his entire family drowned and maybe pizza later. Of course, as Aronofsky said before, he doesn’t see Noah as a particularly religious movie—but rather a fable that’s more generally about faith—and has explained in other interviews that he sees Noah as a “dark, complicated character” and “the first environmentalist” who’s so racked with survivor’s guilt, he invents getting drunk.
