As with any Darren Aronofsky-related story, we open with our typical disclaimer that the director’s name is often invoked by blogs as some sort of smudging ritual to ward off mediocre spirits, so reports of his “next” project are always considered suspect. And with that out of the way, Darren Aronofsky’s next project may well be the “edgy re-telling” of the Noah’s Ark story that he’s been talking about since at least February, provided he can find a studio (or studios) to give him the $130 million he needs to build it and stock it with animals, two of every kind—presumably all CGI, unless Aronofsky is certifiably insane and looking to contract ringworm.
No word on what “edgy” means in this context—though the actual story of Noah has plenty of boozing and incest, which is pretty “edgy”—but given Aronofsky’s penchant for stories about psychological unraveling, it’s possible this version will find Noah slowly beginning to believe that the hippos are plotting against him. Anyway, it’s all described as a “big fantasy epic” and to that end he’s drafted Gladiator’s John Logan to rewrite his script and, you know, epic it up. Interestingly, this is actually the second biblical story Aronofsky has considered of late, as he recently also circled Exodus, which would have found him telling the story of Moses. (If only the Coen Brothers hadn’t already tackled the Book of Job in A Serious Man…)
