Synopsis

Documentary short featuring Pittsburgh Puerto Rican band Machete Kisumontao, who performs covers of 20th Century anthems and songs of the people from Puerto Rico. The band formed in 2006, and has grown to include members with various cultural and musical backgrounds. The documentary explores the music - salsa, bomba, plena, meanings of the songs, some history of Puerto Rico, and social issues that influenced the music. Machete Kisumontao preserves Puerto Rican culture by performing these songs in Spanish, educating audiences about the music, instruments and dances of Puerto Rico, and providing a space for Puerto Ricans and other Latinos to be 'at home' in Pittsburgh. The documentary includes interviews with band members, live performances, and archive material of Puerto Rican music and history.
