America is on a bit of a hot streak, what with most people finally agreeing that the Confederate flag is dumb and racist, and the Supreme Court declaring that gay marriage is totally cool. That means that this year we need to go bigger than beer, fireworks, and American flag T-shirts from Old Navy for America’s birthday. The United States deserves a gift this year that it can really cherish.
Luckily, there are two people who have come up with the perfect gift for America. But, surprisingly, they’re not even from here: Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, the British super-producers behind The Voice and The Bible. Now, at the risk of spoiling an Independence Day surprise, Variety is reporting that Burnett and Downey have signed a deal with the people behind NASCAR to develop a scripted drama series about people who make cars go really fast in a circle, also known as America’s favorite thing.
Downey and Burnett said that they “fell in love” with NASCAR’s “racing world” after they saw a race for the first time, adding that it has “an electric atmosphere and is quintessentially American.” The two of them are still trying to find a writer who can really wring the drama out of people changing tires or crashing into walls, so this project is probably pretty far from actually coming out. Still, in the meantime, we can watch some of America’s favorite NASCAR movies, like Talladega Nights and Herbie: Fully Loaded.
