Pharrell and N.E.R.D. recorded a song for the new SpongeBob movie, compare it to The Beatles
Pharrell is more than just a guy with a big hat who has made an appearance on every popular song of the last few years—his verse on “Let It Go” is incredible—he’s also a member of N.E.R.D., the occasionally defunct rock/funk/whatever band, and the writer behind “Happy,” the most sorrowful dirge of the year. He also happens to be a noted SpongeBob Squarepants fan, and now, through some miraculous series of events, he has managed to combine all of that for his next gig: getting back together with his old pals from N.E.R.D. and writing a song for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water.
“Squeeze Me,” a song Pharrell wrote for the upcoming underwater nature film recently appeared online, and Spin has an embed of it. The site describes the song as “fluffy island funk,” but that doesn’t hype it up nearly enough. Speaking with Variety earlier this month, N.E.R.D.’s Chad Hugo described the music they’re making for the movie as “psychedelic” and “otherworldly,” adding that it’s like “what the Beatles did with ‘Yellow Submarine.’” This could be the first time any SpongeBob-related music has been compared to The Beatles, but let’s hope it’s not the last.
