In a rural area of Upper Egypt, Nagawi works on a self-owned ferry to transport people between the river's two banks for symbolic fare. He gets the love and respect of everyone despite his poverty and satisfaction with the little he earns. He exchanges love with the village's beauty Sadiyyah. He is also good in the traditional art of Tahtib in parties and weddings. Sadiyyah's family objects to the marriage of their daughter to Nagawi due to his poverty. Nagawi's love of Sadiyyah raises the jealousy and hatred of the village's youth, especially children of their evil neighbors, who carry out robberies. They try to harass Nagawi as well as Sadiyyah. When a son of the gang's head fails to seduce Sadiyyah, he slips drunk into her muddy house at night, and tries to rape her. She resists violently and pushes him out of the window to fall to his death. The father decides to take revenge for the death of his son, so he orders another son to abduct Sadiyyah at night and carry her unconscious in a sack to sink her to her death in the Nile. He then carries her body to Nagawi's boat after hitting him badly with a thick stick and tries with other gang member to sink him too. Nagawi survives from drowning and chases the criminals who start to flee. He reports them to the police and they are caught. Nagawi decides then to take revenge for himself from the neighbor's second son in a fierce battle that shifts from land to river, and results in sinking the evil son and Nagawi's victory.
