Synopsis
Signore, a retired official, is visited in his home by his brother, a solicitor, on his return from vacation. In addition to wondering who the new inhabitants of the building who live on the first floor are, his brother begins to ask him what has happened to his life, after his divorce from his wife Gerda five years earlier. It is later discovered that it is Gerda who lives upstairs with her new husband, Fischer, who has set up a gambling den in the apartment. The brother meets Gerda, who tells him about her situation and talks about the fear that her new husband will take away her daughter from Signore in her previous marriage.
