The U.S. is experiencing an abortion access crisis, but women in this country are far from the only ones being denied their own bodily autonomy. Georgian filmmaker Dea Kulumbegashvili (Beginning) takes on this pressing issue in April, which took home the Special Jury Prize after its Venice Film Festival premiere last year.
Produced by Luca Guadagnino, April follows an obstetrician named Nina (Ia Sukhitashvili) who is accused of malpractice after a baby in her care dies during delivery. “The ensuing investigation threatens to expose Nina’s illegal sideline: offering abortions to local women,” the film’s logline reads. “Nina remains fiercely committed to her patients, but she must walk a razor’s edge in order to survive as a pariah in a world which desperately needs her.”
